Promoting sustainable agricultural practices for resilience and improved livelihoods.
Project Head: Dr. Kusiimakwe Tugume, Dean, District Veterinary Officer
1.0 Introduction
The Climate Smart Project focuses on integrating climate-resilient techniques into agricultural production to enhance food security, increase productivity, and reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts among farmers in Kabarole District.
1.1 Goal
To build resilient agricultural systems that sustain livelihoods despite climate variability and change.
1.2 Mission
To promote climate-smart agriculture practices through community engagement, capacity building, and innovation in the livestock and crop sectors.
1.3 Objectives
- Introduce and scale up climate-resilient crop and livestock practices.
- Enhance knowledge and skills of farmers and stakeholders on climate change adaptation.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities.
- Support sustainable natural resource management in production systems.
2.0 Achievements (July 2024 – June 2025)
- Trained 500 farmers in climate-smart agricultural techniques.
- Distributed drought-tolerant crop seeds and improved livestock breeds to 300 households.
- Implemented water harvesting and soil conservation structures on 200 farms.
- Conducted 10 community awareness campaigns on climate change impacts and mitigation.
- Partnered with local and national organizations to leverage climate financing.
3.0 Challenges
- Limited access to climate-resilient inputs due to high costs.
- Low adoption rates of new practices due to traditional farming preferences.
- Insufficient funding to scale up interventions district-wide.
- Climate variability causing unpredictable production cycles.
4.0 Way Forward
- Strengthen partnerships for resource mobilization and technical support.
- Expand farmer training and demonstration plots to increase adoption.
- Enhance monitoring and evaluation to track climate-smart impacts.
- Integrate climate-smart practices into district agricultural policies and plans.
